Take Me Home

Days like today make me count my blessings. A person can easily forget the beauty and tranquility of living out in the far reaches of the state rarely touched by people. The view can only be enhanced by experiencing it on the back of a great horse.

By the temperature outside, it is hard to believe it's time to flip the calendar to November. The thermometer reads a balmy 68 degrees, yet the first snow storm could sneak up on us at any moment. It is time to bring the cows a little closer to home.

We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day to make the 6-mile drive to the cover crop and corn stalk fields by the yard. With friends, family and a few good horses we made our way north.

Our daughters play a huge role in the responsibilities of the ranch and today was no exception. They are integral cogs in the wheel at Vollmer Angus Ranch. From gathering cows to doing chores to cleaning pens, they know how to get their hands dirty. One of the things I am most proud of is that our girls are growing up in a world where life doesn't always revolve around them. The animals come first, before the Saturday night date and before Christmas dinner.

About 150 cows made their way north on our rarely traveled gravel road. It was quiet and uneventful, which is always a good thing. I have heard it said that to move cows fast, you have to move them slow.

A couple of pickups made appearances, saw the black mass of cows walking down the middle of the road, and promptly turned around. There is an easier route than to maneuver through the middle of a cattle drive.

They head out to find a drink of water and meander over to the corn stalks. It was a beautiful day for doing what we love to do best. Viewing life on the back of a horse has a special place in my life. There is nothing quite like it. Happy Fall! It has been a great one.
